Job Description

The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) is collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing Group (UMG). Part-funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), it brings together the best in academia, industry and R&D in a ‘live’ manufacturing environment.The group conducts research and development of innovative technology for automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, power generation and rail sectors. The AME aims to contribute to Unipart’s growth and sustainability and to wider economic growth by making the UK globally competitive.

Job Description


The success of the AME collaboration is dependent on a strong core team of engineers to deliver research and development projects. The project portfolio is growing and AME requires more enthusiastic engineers with suitable experience to deliver them. The roles offer a unique opportunity to exploit your innovative potential without some of the constraints which are necessary for engineers working within a product delivery ‘lifecycle’ environment.

A broad engineering ability and interest will be advantageous as the portfolio of projects can be diverse. Proficiency in areas such as, design of experiments, design verification testing, design for manufacture, prototype manufacturing, and product development, would benefit the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver development projects supporting next generation product and process technology, aligned with company business plans and roadmaps
  • Work with UMG engineering and consortium teams to understand current and future challenges
  • Build relationships with relevant UMG suppliers, customers and other consortium partners, as and where necessary
  • Develop and manage design verification routines to demonstrate performance of innovative concepts and designs
  • Manage the delivery of representative test coupons, demonstrators and prototypes to support performance tests correlation and design verification activities
  • Apply and use instrumentation and control software to generate performance test data
  • To collect interpret test data and report performance to relative predictions and specifications
  • Grow the Institute’s strength with anchor technologies, identifying and developing skills, processes and equipment
  • To support the learning and research activities taking place in the institute

Key characteristics of the role

  • Identify innovative solutions for future product and process challenges identified
  • Provision of engineering support for AME projects, and resolution of technical issues
  • Design and plan test regimes and experiments to measure success and correlate CAE
  • Delivery of working prototypes to test and technology demonstrators
  • Manage time and delivery of work within agreed project time plans, exceeding customer expectations

  • Relationships: Establish good working relationships and partnerships with: Immediate Team, Management Team, Coventry University Team, Customers, suppliers and consortium partners

Person Specification


  • Experience of the design & development of a mechanical system either automotive or in a sector with transferable skills
  • Developing tests and designing experiments to demonstrate a systems performance or correlate predicted performance
  • Project management including planning with measurable targets, identification of key enablers and use of gateways for deliverables.
  • Knowledge of industry standard tools such as FMEA, APQP, DoE, GDT,
  • Involvement with CAE activities such as FEA, CFD, and / or CAD, would be advantageous

Knowledge and Skills

  • Educated to Degree or HND level or equivalent
  • Proven practical engineering and problem solving capability
  • Principles of design of experiments, developing robust test regimes and accurately reporting findings
  • Ability to interpret data including use of mathematical statistical methods, spread sheets and other analysis tools
  • Automotive powertrain systems knowledge preferred
  • Electrification of automotive powertrains would be an advantage
  • Materials technology for high strength, light weight, low emissions
  • Good general grasp of manufacturing methods, DFM, Lean, Agile…
  • Computer literate and familiar with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Project
  • Understands use of CAE to simulate manufacture and use and predict product behaviour. Can specify requirements and interpret results.
